Foreboding Aside

“The only way we can make the most of our lives is to make the most of our moments. Today, wherever you are, decide to stay. We can know the gifts that lie in the present only if we stay in it long enough to receive them.”― Cleo Wade, Heart Talk: Poetic Wisdom for a Better Life

“it was time

so i said yes
i said yes to living
i said yes to loving
i said yes to being
my…
self
illuminated
and unafraid”

― Cleo Wade, Heart Talk Poetic Wisdom for a Better Life

Pandemic hangover.
New wars.
Economic struggles.
Incivility.
Loneliness.
Ongoing political noise with no action.
Many reasons for foreboding.

And yet, and yet.
Cynicism, despair, fear, complaining, judgment, division, anger and pining never changed the world.
Imagination, hope, inspiration, prayer, generosity, beauty, empathy, kindness, lightness, optimism, daring, effort, energy, compassion, understanding, action.
These are what change the world.
Foreboding aside and let’s carry on.
Moving from scarcity and stagnancy into abundance and action.
Peace. Joy. Delight. Resilience. Grit. Faith. Community. Connection. Light.
A resounding, reverberating, reignited YES to life and our ability to change it for the better.
And our responsibility to do so.

“Keep your inner world loving and hopeful and your outside world will begin to reflect exactly that.”― Cleo Wade, Heart Talk: Poetic Wisdom for a Better Life

Rain Jacket

“Rain is grace; rain is the sky descending to the earth; without rain, there would be no life.” – John Updike

Against my natural instinct to not go out in the rain, I put on a rain jacket to get the girls for an end of day walk after another meeting-packed day. My last meeting yesterday was with a client who I’ve worked with for 12-years who is merging with another organization, so it was my last meeting with them. It was another good-bye. This has been a year filled with good-byes – of people, of activities we enjoy doing, of “normal” living.

Life often feels like series of good-byes and transitions. Our natural instinct is to avoid, run and hide from them like going into the rain. If we live well, we weave experiences, places and people through our fiber. They become a part of us so when things change, a piece of us is carved out of our being and we are never the same. But that is not the end of the story.

On the other side of good-byes are fresh hellos and adventures waiting to be entered when we cross the threshold of what has been to what is next. If we keep looking backwards, we miss what’s already present and what the past has prepared us for in new paths to explore. Life is a year-round classroom. We decide if we are going to learn and grow or do just enough to get a C+ by coasting unaware, stuck and dry in sameness.

Endings and beginnings are a package deal. If we allow, we concurrently enter the depth of departure and embrace the anticipation of new adventures. As a door closes, it prompts the next door to open. Often, it disguises itself as rain, so put on your rain jacket and get out into the rain, crossing the threshold to abundance and light.

Abundance Mindset

Often times, we look at our life through a lens of scarcity or abundance – the glass is half empty or half full.  Scarcity thoughts stop us so we can count, track, protect and monitor our limited resources carefully. Not a bad idea in particular when it comes to our financial resources – to not live beyond our means. But when it comes to our thoughts, activities, relationships, we can choose to see the abundance of what’s around us right now, to foster gratitude and an appreciation of each day.

When I thought of doing this blog for the past six months, scarcity immediately came to mind: “What do I have to say?” “Will I have time to do this right?” “How long before I run out of ideas on what to write on?” “Will people take the time to read it?” Those doubts, that little voice in our head, stop us from trying new things. We want the answers before we start.
