Absurd Hope

“Compassion constitutes a radical form of criticism, for it announces that the hurt is to be taken seriously, that the hurt is not to be accepted as normal and natural but is an abnormal and unacceptable condition for humanness.”― Walter Brueggemann

“May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers,
half-truths and superficial relationships,
so that we will live deeply in our hearts.
May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression
and exploitation of people and the earth,
so that we will work for justice, equity and peace.
May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer,
so that we will reach out our hands
to comfort them and change their pain to joy.
And may God bless us with the foolishness to think that
we can make a difference in our world,
so that we will do the things which others say cannot be done.” – Sister Ruth Fox

To be in the world and not of it.
To not succumb to fear.
To keep swinging.
To stay in the game rather than spectate.
To contribute rather than criticize.
To care rather than numb.
To not accept the status quo.
To character not flash.
To delineate, see through, understand.
To principles not rhetoric.
To laughter, light, awe, wonder, beauty.
To compassion, heart, kindness, resilience, optimism, joy, love.
Absurd, radical, gritty, tough, foolish, brilliant hope.
Lighthouse in the night.
To do things which others say cannot be done.
Fight the good fight.

“Hope, on one hand, is an absurdity too embarrassing to speak about, for it flies in the face of all those claims we have been told are facts. Hope is the refusal to accept the reading of reality which is the majority opinion; and one does that only at great political and existential risk. On the other hand, hope is subversive, for it limits the grandiose pretension of the present, daring to announce that the present to which we have all made commitments is now called into question.”― Walter Brueggemann, The Prophetic Imagination

Enlarged Horizon

“A dream is the bearer of a new possibility, the enlarged horizon, the great hope.” – Howard Thurman

“The great power of separating the watching mind from the thinking mind is that the watching mind is innately loving. Some call this part of the psyche the ‘compassionate witness.’ Sharing our difficult feelings with a compassionate witness is the crucial step that heals the infinite small wounds inflicted upon the soul by everyday life.” – Martha Beck

“A river cuts through a rock, not because of its power but because of its persistence.” – Jim Watkins

Soil and Sun

“The connection you are creating here is like a flower. It requires soil and sun, things that, thanks to God, are given freely. But it is you, all of us, who has to water the flower to make it grow. Without water, all relations remain small. They can’t open, and eventually they die.”― Tembi Locke, From Scratch

“Love is an action, never simply a feeling.”― bell hooks

A daily decision.
To love people where they are.
Self, included.
Not where we want them to be.
Not where they were in the past.
Not where they will be in the future.
Right now, on this very ground.
That’s what makes love so hard.
To move beyond our expectations.
To not get our way.
To offer understanding when we don’t receive it.
When love takes root, it overflows, grows, blooms.
Making it the only viable way to walk through this world with joy.
Less fear, more love.
A daily decision.
Bright. Bold. Beautiful.
Show your true colors.

“But when we feel we are not understood, there is a sense in which we are homeless. And so we must always provide a home of understanding. There will inevitably be times when we do not understand someone’s behavior or a certain response, but we can understand the person.”― Mary Francis, A Time of Renewal: Daily Reflections for the Lenten Season

More Ice Cream

“Is your glass half empty or half full?” asked the mole.
“I think I’m grateful to have a glass,” said the boy.”― Charlie Mackesy, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

“If I had my life to live over…

Someone asked me the other day if I had my life to live over would I change anything.

My answer was no, but then I thought about it and changed my mind.

If I had my life to live over again I would have waxed less and listened more.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy and complaining about the shadow over my feet, I’d have cherished every minute of it and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was to be my only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.

I would have eaten popcorn in the “good” living room and worried less about the dirt when you lit the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would have burnt the pink candle that was sculptured like a rose before it melted while being stored.

I would have sat cross-legged on the lawn with my children and never worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television … and more while watching real life.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband which I took for granted.

I would have eaten less cottage cheese and more ice cream.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick, instead of pretending the Earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren’t there for a day.

I would never have bought ANYTHING just because it was practical/wouldn’t show soil/ guaranteed to last a lifetime.

When my child kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, “Later. Now, go get washed up for dinner.”

There would have been more I love yous … more I’m sorrys … more I’m listenings … but mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute of it … look at it and really see it … try it on … live it … exhaust it … and never give that minute back until there was nothing left of it.”

― Erma Bombeck, Eat Less Cottage Cheese And More Ice Cream Thoughts On Life From Erma Bombeck

“The greatest illusion,” said the mole, “is that life should be perfect.”― Charlie Mackesy, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

Laughter Prescription

“Humor is a spontaneous, wonderful bit of an outburst that just comes. It’s unbridled, its unplanned, it’s full of surprises.”― Erma Bombeck

Each day, I look for different quotes to try to tie a post together. Today, I found a variety from Erma Bombeck. With each new quote, I started laughing. It was a vivid reminder of the desperate need that we all have that we don’t tend to often enough in this serious business of life – laughing. There are also studies that people with dogs laugh more frequently which is probably why Abby and Sasha are frequent guests here too.

Laughter releases endorphins, improves immunity, reduces stress and increases your heart rate. So a written prescription below and remember to take it daily. Smile, laugh, find joy right in the midst of whatever is going on right now. The problems, people and circumstances will still be there when you return to “reality” but you will see them in a new light. Watch out, gratitude and optimism may follow as well. 🙂

“When humor goes, there goes civilization.”― Erma Bombeck

“Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the ‘Titanic’ who waved off the dessert cart.”― Erma Bombeck

“Written on her tombstone: “I told you I was sick.”― Erma Bombeck

“Did you ever notice that the first piece of luggage on the carousel never belongs to anyone?”― Erma Bombeck

“Sometimes I can’t figure designers out. It’s as if they flunked human anatomy.”― Erma Bombeck

“If you can’t make it better, you can laugh at it.”― Erma Bombeck

May you fill this prescription several times each day.

If Only

“The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them.”― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

“I don’t live in either my past or my future. I’m interested only in the present. If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man. Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we’re living now.”― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

If only we held the present fully and completely.
If only we saw overflowing abundance and light.
If only we moved out in love and bypassed fear.
If only we laughed often, danced with abandon.
If only, why not is our first response.
To turning if only into YES! and…
New day, new way.
One single thought at a time, renewed and ready.
Choose a different path, arrive at a different destination.
May joy, peace, laughter, trying, ease be your path today, if only.

“When each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises.”― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

The Power of Yes

“No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. To those who knock it is opened.” – C.S. Lewis

“Yes to everything scary. Yes to everything that takes me out of my comfort zone. Yes to everything that feels like it might be crazy. Yes to everything that feels out of character. Yes to everything that feels goofy. Yes to everything. Everything. Say yes. Yes. Speak. Speak NOW. ‘Yes,’ I say. ‘Yes.’” — Shonda Rhimes, Year of Yes

Fear divides, paralyzes, lies, diminishes.
Love multiplies, flourishes, invites, feeds.
Joy, laughter, gratitude, generosity, kindness, hope, enthusiasm.
Strength builders, mind openers, game changers.
Go a bit deeper, beyond the surface, noise and soundbites.
Inquire, explore, imagine, act.
Be light in the clouds, flowers in the weeds, a seeker of goodness.
Love overcomes fear, every single time.
To more YES!

“Imagine how we would be if we were less afraid.”― Charlie Mackesy, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

Bring Light

“Our role in life is to bring the light of our own souls to the dim places around us.”― Joan Chittister

“An open mind must be mitigated by discernment. Knowing what to take in and what to discard or file away for future perusal is important to one’s growth.” – Safi Thomas

Open your heart.
Get closer to what you judge.
Question your assumptions.
Know what you believe and why.
Anchor in hope.
Move with optimism.
Sing rather than shout.
Encourage rather than criticize.
Consistent action rather than hollow words.
Be kind.
Cast light.

“Compassionate action emerges from the sense of openness, connectedness, and discernment you have created.” – Joan Halifax

“The morning glories and the sunflowers turn naturally toward the light, but we have to be taught, it seems.”― Richard Rohr

“Aristotle was convinced that most people get most of their pleasure from learning things and wondering about and at the world.”― Edith Hall, Aristotle’s Way: How Ancient Wisdom Can Change Your Life

Lead with the heart, transform the mind.

“Life is not a matter of creating a special name for ourselves, but of uncovering the name we have always had.”― Richard Rohr, Immortal Diamond: The Search for Our True Self

Bliss of the Moment

“That’s what it means to really feel alive – to be so immersed in the passionate bliss of the moment that you don’t think about yesterday or tomorrow. You just enjoy what you’re doing and love every piece of it.”― Lori Deschene

“Practice the pause. Pause before judging. Pause before assuming. Pause before accusing. Pause whenever you’re about to react harshly and you’ll avoid doing and saying things you’ll later regret.”― Lori Deschene

Intention to action.
Attention to awareness.
Reaction to response.
Awe to gratitude.
The power of the pause, of noticing.
Immersed in today alone.
Bliss woven into simple moments.
Flow and ease.
Get out of your own way.

“The moment we decide things don’t have to be a certain way, we create the possibility that they could be better than we know to imagine them.”― Lori Deschene
