Imagine

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.” – Dr. Seuss

Combine imagination with a pair of sunglasses and the six foot wave of snow in my front yard transforms into waves rolling in on the beach in Malibu, Kona, Monterey Bay, Cancun (insert your favorite beach here). Surfs up.

When we are not overcome by the trivial, each day becomes “show and tell.”  A simple shift and we’re laying on a beach, warm sun on our face, relaxing to the music of the ocean waves dancing on the beach. Imagine. Delight. Lighten Up.

“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Impractical, but…

“Love is the triumph of imagination over intelligence.” – H. L. Mencken

Sometimes love isn’t easy. And that’s the time when it’s needed the most. Love says we should choose…

Patience over frustration
Forgiveness over resentment
Praise over criticism
Kindness over gossip
Ideas over complaint
Understanding over judgment
The best over assumptions
Silence over “I told you so”
Faith over fear
Present over past
Attention over busy
Character over popularity
Second over first
Hope over despair
Blessing over curse
More over less
Light over shadow

Love is impractical, but it is the only choice we have to live the life we are meant to live, to become our true self. It calls us to let go. It calls us to real, lasting peace. It calls us and we must answer “yes”, even and especially when it makes no sense at all.

“Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.” – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

The Sum of It All

“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” – Robert Frost

Before diving into next year with a slew of the same unfulfilled resolutions, take a moment and look back at the year that has gone by. If you take photos on your phone, this is a great way to sum up a year quickly. As I looked at both my photos and my calendar, I am surprised at how surprised I am. It’s been a year.

February in Washington D.C. for work; March on a cruise; in Spring, my nephew graduated from college and my niece graduated from high school; my brother ran his first marathon; my niece ran her first half marathon; I trained all summer for my second marathon; back to DC in July with Emily; a summer of Sundays on the pontoon; chickens moved into the neighborhood, making walks with Molly and Lily an adventure in excitement everyday; an intense year at work with 27 website transitions in 8 months and an acquisition, etc… and life goes on, and on. And it does whether we recognize it or not.

If I thought too much about what was to come, I would have frozen in my tracks. We may make plans and some will work and others won’t. As Woody Allen observed, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” As much as we think we are in control, we are not. It’s not what we go through, but how we go through it. I passed on some fronts and failed on others, but humbly keep getting back up and trying to do and be better.

In the new year, my resolutions, more importantly, my promises to myself are to recognize the boundless gifts that are embedded in each day, to keep growing into the person I am meant to be and to give more than I receive. I can accomplish this through living a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle – running, eating well, faith, prayer, gratitude, compassion, choosing love over assumptions and judgment, light over shadow.

Life is made up of the sum of our decisions, actions and inactions each day. Choose well.

Detach

“In order to settle down in the quiet of our own being we must learn to be detached from the results of our own activity. We must withdraw ourselves, to some extent, from effects that are beyond our control and be content with the good will and the work that are the quiet expression of our inner life. We must be content to live without watching ourselves live, to work without expecting an immediate reward, to love without an instantaneous satisfaction, and to exist without any special recognition.” – Thomas Merton, No Man is an Island

Immerse yourself into each day with no attachments or expectations with the exception of giving your very best to each moment, each person. When we focus on doing good and being authentic, it’s so much more than enough. Detach from that which you have no real influence and get out of your own way.

One Acorn

”The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Go start a forest today with a smile, a compliment, an unwavering enthusiasm that rises above the distractions of the day. Expand your horizon by getting outside of yourself. So much to discover, to be grateful for. The power of one acorn.

“It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

10080

“Time is not a line, but a series of now-points.” – Taisen Deshimaru

There are 10080 minutes in the week. As you begin this week, what’s your plan? Anguish or anticipation? We waste a lot of time deconstructing the past instead of constructing the present. Patiently, we wait for the “perfect” moment to make changes, do something different, pursue what we really want. Be impatient and move, only 9660 minutes left.

Put those “now-points” to good use this week and enjoy your life while you’re at it. And be kind along the way.

Let Go of the Rope

“By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try. The world is beyond the winning.” – Lao Tzu

“All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.” – Havelock Ellis

“All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.” – Havelock Ellis

Summer reminds me of waterskiing the beautiful lakes and rivers in Minnesota. Walking out of work after another thick day, “let go of the rope” came to mind. When you start losing your balance waterskiing, you naturally let go of the rope so you don’t get pulled under and dragged along. A vivid reminder of releasing and letting go of the day, finding a renewed balance.

We think that we should hold tight no matter what, even if it drags us under. There’s no heroism or strength in stupidity and stubbornness. When you get off balance and start to fall, let go of the rope. You’ll float.

Agreement

“Happiness, contentment, the health and growth of the soul, depend, as men have proved over and over again, upon some simple issue, some single turning of the soul.” – George A. Smith

When we quiet the noise, we realize that much of our conflict is created by us – thoughts, assumptions, gossip, keeping score, coasting. Driven by us then conveniently projected on others. Our pursuit of getting others in agreement with us is futile. The starting and ending point is getting in agreement with ourselves. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz beautifully summarizes key agreements for us to own. Pretty simple and profound. We can get in agreement and it really is our choice.

“Be Impeccable with Your Word
Speak with integrity.  Say only what you mean.  Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others.  Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Don’t Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you.  What others say and do is a projection of their own dream.  When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Don’t Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want.  Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama.  With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick.  Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.”

Leave the Behind Behind

“We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future.” – George Bernard Shaw

“Look at life through the windshield, not the rear-view mirror” - Byrd Baggett

“Look at life through the windshield, not the rear-view mirror” – Byrd Baggett

No more neutral, shifting into the low gear of the past. We drive through too much of our life looking through the rearview mirror, missing what’s right in front of us. Leave the behind behind and discover the joy of now, this very moment. Full speed ahead.

Serious Play

“I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition.” – Martha Washington

Lighten up and get serious about enjoying your life today, not someday. Negative thoughts, circumstances and people cloud and distort our view. Look a bit longer and deeper, there’s always something to be grateful for, to celebrate. Our happiness is found in our thoughts, imagination and giving ourselves to others.

To Lily, a puddle is a playground. To Molly, a snowstorm is the chance to run in the Iditarod and I’m her sled. For me, a five mile run is the finish of the Boston marathon. Actively participate, play and embrace each day and open its many gifts.

If misery loves company, it’s time for optimism and delight to throw a party. Get down to some serious play today, tomorrow and the next. Seriously.
