Autumn’s Adieu

As the leaves rain down and limbs go bare, the morning freeze lingers;
Autumn color remained longer, a blessing not to be forgotten, yet we will forget;
Winter with its crisp air and crystal flakes to enter soon;
Commanding rest and repose;
Do not forgo the seasons both without and within;
Each one and the transition to the next carries its own gifts,
To autumn, to winter, to spring, to summer and all the inbetweens.

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

Where are the songs of spring? Ay, Where are they?

Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;

Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.
